About me

Who am I?

I'm Alvin; I'm a Full Stack Software Developer with a backend focus. Data analysis and manipulation are challenges off of which I thrive. Having graduated from the Industrial (Systems) Engineering program at the University of Toronto, I relish enhancing interactions among human and technological systems. My ultimate goal is to improve lives by solving problems in a methodical, engineering way.

I have a blog?

Yes! Check out my blog where I share my latest thoughts, proofs-of-concepts and experiments.

Whence came I?

In the early 2000s, I interned as a "developer trainee" to accrue work experience requisite for my studies. A mental health association was my sole client. They needed help digitizing paper forms, resulting in my first foray into web design. How long ago was it? I used Struts 1, and DB2.

My full-time career began with a frontend focus. My primary responsibility was to develop GUIs for a web-based retail management system (RMS), while supporting a smattering of other projects on the side. Soon after, I transitioned to a backend role, and became solely responsible for a SOAP web service API. The API enabled satellite retail outlets to communicate with the central RMS. This was also the first time I made and deployed software to Amazon EC2, which introduced me to monitoring and incident resolution using a DevOps approach. Being one of the first team members to integrate cloud technologies with the organization gave me the opportunity to configure cloud servers for our applications, and coordinate build and deployment processes with my team.

From there, I transitioned to the telecommunications industry, and my first project therein: a web-based point-of-sale system, and a client service agreement generator using XSL transformation. One of my largest undertakings, and one of the most fun by far, was developing ETLs using Python to load millions of transactions daily from operational databases to BI databases, and then designing and developing ETLs using Qlik Sense for data visualizations customized for business users.
